From the recording LIVE Folkabilly
Lyrics
1.'Twas in the year of 1903
the 23rd day of May
Doctor Horatio Jackson set out
from Frisco, by the Bay
2.Yes, it was a 50 dollar wager
that had prompted the whole ordeal
to cross the entire US of A
for the first time in an automobile
3.So, with his trusty dog and mechanic
Bud and Sewell respectively
they headed straight for the East Coast
with thick goggles on all three
4.Yes, in his open-top, 2 cylinder Winton, they began
defying unpaved and dusty old roads
for no Highways had yet stretched this land
5.Up through the Rocky Mountains
with no fuel pump for to aid
having to drive in reverse up the steep,
treacherous, depthly grades
6.Then, down through the swamps and the barren plains
in 2 months time, they came
at last, to New York City
and to immediate National Acclaim
7.The 'Mad Doctor from Vermont', they had called him before
now, a hero in their eyes
Horatio Nelson Jackson
with Bud and Sewell by his side
8.I guess it just goes to show you
if you're patient and you believe
and set your eyes upon the prize
you're bound to eventually succeed
9.So, listen all you heated motorists
(you drivers) with Road Rage
Thank your lucky stars that you're sitting
on a road that's smooth and paved
10.And the next time you feel like lashing out
at your neighbor on the road
just think of ol' Horatio's Ride
and be grateful you're even on a road (repeat last 2 lines to tag!)
